Elmbrook Historical Society

Ruby Farm

Ruby Farm was purchased by VK Development in 2005.  Commercial development plans have not been publicly shared.  Elmbrook Historical Society members are optimistic that the “Ten Most Endangered Properties” designation will result in preservation of the historic buildings.

The farmhouse on Calhoun Road was built about 1860 by one of Brookfield’s early settlers, Jacob Ruby.  The Ruby Farm was a working dairy farm for three generations.  Ruby Farm's team of horses became one of the most famous six-horse hitches in the US.  The horses were sold in 1989.

According to the Historical Inventory of Brookfield, Ruby Farm’s barn with cupola west of the house is one of the best in the Township.  The farmhouse and the horse barn are important community landmarks.
